World PAHLS.    School supply sales will be starting soon. Consider shopping for supplies for our Haitian students to support our World PAHLS (Portage and Haitian Learners Share) program.  They need pencils, colored pencils, pencil sharpeners, and erasers the most.  Supplies and cash donations for shipping expenses can be dropped off at Portage High School.  Thank you for your support!

John Muir Playground.  Thanks to the hard work of the John Muir PTO, especially Shannon Straka, families of John Muir, community members and PCSD Building and Grounds Supervisor Larry Messer, the children of John Muir Elementary School will have a lot to smile about this fall.  A brand-spanking new, colorful playground, including structures that better match the children in grades 4 - 6, was installed this summer, giving students a lot more activities to enjoy at recess.  The "official grand re-opening" of the playground will be held on August 30, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. (during the school's open house).  Please feel free to stop by on August 30, 2010 to help us celebrate this wonderful accomplishment!

Summer School.  Summer School 2010 was a hit this year.  Students enjoyed old and "new" classes.  Outdoor Education grew to 40 kids and included 3rd graders this year at Rusch.  Guitar class continues to increase in numbers as more and more students want to learn to play the guitar.  Over 40 students joined the new 2nd Grade Academy for reading, math and arts and craft fun.  The Preschool, Kindergarten and First Grade Academies continue to be well attended and lots of fun.  Reader's Theater, On Broadway, Keyboarding, Team Building/Low Ropes and Walking Club were new additions to John Muir.  Movin' Up at the middle school was added to help students transition from 6th grade to middle school.  All in all, lots of fun was held by all.  Look forward to summer school 2011 which will begin June 20th, 2011.

MAP Results.  Based on research data (2005 Norms Study), consisting of millions of students from 41 other states, the Northwest Evaluation Association, has concluded that a school district is successfully helping students to improve their annual achievement levels, if 50% or more of students in the District reach their individual target growth goal for the school year.  In the top 10% of schools nationally, about 60 to 70% of the students reach their growth norm target in reading, while about 65 to 75% of students meet this target in mathematics.  For the 2009/10 school year, the percentage of students that reached their growth norm target was 60.12% in reading and mathematics.  Congratulations to both students and staff!!!
